Keep it Clean: Why Clutter Can Kill a Website

Posted by on February 17th, 2016 in Design

Many factors go into creating a great website.  The most important of these is creating one that is easy to navigate. Thinking about the layout and how a viewer will interact with the site is central to creating an experience that is enjoyable.  Here are several main points to think about when building your website.

Ease of access.

If the user can’t find what they are looking for, most likely they will get frustrated and give up on your website.  In order to prevent that from happening, you need to make sure your content is easily accessible.  What does this mean?  Clean navigation.  If it is an important link, it should be one click away.  If it is linked multiple times through the nav, then it will naturally be very difficult to find quickly.

Another aspect to consider is that more and more people are viewing websites via mobile devices.  Since this trend will only increase in the future, it is even more important to have a website that is easy to navigate.

Easy on the eyes.

Advertising is great, but in moderation.  If Nascar has taught us anything, it’s that plastering your car with logos is a bad look.  The same goes for your website.  If you want to advertise, I would suggest utilizing online advertising instead. If you would like to showcase something specific on your own site, rotating banners are great option.

Also, another thing to watch out for is how much copy you use on your website.  As you are adding content, it is easy to get carried away.  That is why trimming down copy to the essentials is key.  This is especially true on the homepage.  This is grand central station for your website, so you will want to stay focused on your end goal: getting the viewer where they want to go.  If you clutter your homepage with excess amount of copy and images, it becomes much more difficult to reach this goal.

Clean design makes happy viewers.

If your site is easy to navigate, and uses good, clean design, you will have one great side effect: happy viewers!  Finding information fast and using graphics that are both informative and pleasant to look at makes for a great user experience.

In closing, if you are creating a new website or redesigning an existing site, keep this one concept in mind: Keep it clean.  Your viewers will thank you.
